Biography & Bibliography
Billie Holiday (Eleanor Gough McKay)
geboren: 7.April 1915, Philadelphia, Pennylvania, USA

Billie Holiday (Eleanor Gough McKay)
born: 7.April 1915, Philadelphia, Pennylvania, USA
died: 17.July 1959, New York, New York, USABillie Holiday (1915-1959) was especially known for the authenticity of her vocal sound. Her interpretations of standard popular songs earned became believable stories, seemingly personal stories more than with any other jazz singer. Sie bends notes, lengthens and shortens phrases, lends the pieces she sings a new quality by her extremely individual voice full of moaning and sorrow. In 1939 Holiday recorded "Strange Fruit", a moving piece of lyric reflecting upon racism and lynching in the American South, a protest song in which sound, rhythm, melody and her voice convey emotions so deep as few in jazz history.

David Margolick's "Strange Fruit" (2000) about one of her best known pieces is a study of the social situation as well as of Billie Holiday, her circle of friends and the story behind the tune.Internet:
