Herbie
Mann (Herbert Jay Solomon)
geb.: 16. April 1930,
Brooklyn, New York/USA
gest.: 30. Juni 2003, Pecos, New Mexico/USA
Herbie Mann
[Wolfram Knauer]

Herbie Mann (Herbert Jay Solomon)
born: 16. April 1930,
Brooklyn, New York/USA
died: 30. Juni 2003, Pecos, New Mexico/USA
Herbie
Mann was born in Brooklyn, learned the clarinet at age nine, playing saxophone
and flute on the side. He started his professional carreer as a musician during
his army time in Italy. After his discharge in 1953 he played with accordionist
Mat Mathews as well as with arranger Pete Rugolo. From 1959 he led his own
band, the Afro-Jazz Sextet. In 1962 he one of the first musicians to mix Brazilian
music and jazz, recording an album with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Sergio Mendes
and others. He also incorporated elements of African or Japanese music. In
1960 the US State Department send him on a tour of fifteen African states,
in the early 1960s he travelled repeatedly to Brazil, in 1964 he toured Japan.
Since 1960 he was under contract with Atlantic Records. His live recording
"Comin' Home Baby" became a commercial hit in 1962. He reached the
jazz market as well as listeners from the rhythm 'n' blues and the rock scenes.
Among the musicians who started their career as sidemen in his bands, were
pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Roy Ayers. In the 1970s Mann had several
chart hits with his band Family of Mann, among them albums like "Hi-jack"
(1975) and "Superman" (1979). In the 1980s the flutist returned
to his roots, playing more bossa nova and bebop influenced music.
Herbie
Mann was a virtuoso and multifaceted flutist, brilliantly fluent in all the
different musical languages he engaged in during his career. The commercial
successes he reached in the 1960s foreshadowed much of what younger colleagues
would try with their fusion experiments in the 1970s. [Wolfram Knauer]
