Readers React: Jazz musician Dave Roper touched many lives

Author

Legendary Lehigh Valley jazz musician Dave Roper died April 8. While the entire arts community has been placed on hold by the coronavirus, it is exceptionally sad to know that one stellar artist will not be returning.

Dave touched so many lives and in so many ways. First, as an English teacher and scholastic scrimmage coach for innumerable students at Emmaus High School. But more notably — and the way I knew Mr. Roper — as one of the best musical talents to ever grace the Lehigh Valley.

Dave’s interpretations of the Great American Songbook were inventive, unique and endearing. His signature encore, a solo rendition of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” was an unforgettable experience. His musicianship was consummate. His bantering asides from the keyboard were droll and charming. His humility and grace were profound.

In the end, his great legacy is that he brought such abundant joy, beauty and happiness to all fortunate enough to hear him play for over 60 years. Godspeed, Mr. Roper. You will be sorely missed. Thank you for the memories.
